US-led coalition conducts comprehensive strike on Houthi military sites

US-led coalition conducts comprehensive attack on Houthi military sites in Yemen.

In a significant operation led by the United States and its coalition partners, at least 60 targets across 16 different Houthi military sites in Yemen were struck overnight. This strike comes as a response to over 100 attacks on US forces by the Iran-backed Houthi group. The US defense secretary, currently in the hospital, released a statement emphasizing that this action sends a clear message to the Houthis that they will face further consequences if they continue their illegal attacks.

This attack stands as the most comprehensive operation conducted since the war in Gaza began. It entailed targeting 60 sites in 16 locations using over 100 precision-guided munitions delivered through various modes, including air, surface, and subsurface capabilities. The targets included comprehensive command and control nodes, radar systems, launch systems, storage sites for rockets, missiles, and drones, as well as munitions depots. A thorough assessment of the damage caused by the strikes is currently underway.

The success of the operation is partially attributed to the efficient surveillance capabilities in the region. Monitoring indicated that the Houthis were attempting to conceal some of their weaponry in recent days, but the coalition forces were able to identify their movements and attack accordingly. Additional strikes may be considered if significant capabilities are still detected.

It is crucial to recognize that Iran serves as the center of gravity for the aggression witnessed in the Middle East region. The US has consistently reiterated this point. While targeting the proxies alone might not be sufficient, it becomes imperative to address Iran directly. Central Command (CENTCOM) has compiled a list of targets, offering a comprehensive approach to dismantle Iran's support for these proxies. It is crucial for the US to prioritize this aspect and reassess their strategy in dealing with Iran in the region, acknowledging the failure of previous approaches.

The failure to confront Iran effectively has allowed them to gain strength and exploit perceived weaknesses. The Biden administration must reset the strategy and prioritize cooperation with Arab nations and Israel to counter Iran's influence. Saudi Arabia, a country that has experienced aggression from the Houthis for years, has been left unsupported during previous attempts to address this issue. Rebuilding these partnerships and shifting towards a more proactive approach is necessary.

Regarding the disclosure of the attack, it is important to note that the Houthis have been on the offensive, continuously attacking US forces for weeks. The coalition forces had every right to respond, and there was no need to provide prior notice to Congress or others involved. Conducting the operation covertly allows for greater effectiveness, ensuring that surprises are not compromised, and the mission's objectives are met successfully.

As the situation develops, it is expected that the United States and its coalition partners will continue to monitor and respond to any further aggression from the Houthis and their Iranian backers.
