U.S. intelligence officials have issued a warning to American defense companies urging them to enhance their security measures in light of recent acts of sabotage in Europe believed to be orchestrated by Russia. The National Counterintelligence and Security Center released a public bulletin advising defense companies, especially those supporting Ukraine in its conflict against Russia, to bolster their defenses due to Russia's increasing aggression towards Ukraine's allies.
The bulletin highlighted the risks posed by Russia's sabotage activities, stating that such operations can instill fear, cause damage to critical infrastructure, disrupt commerce, and even result in injuries or fatalities. Reports from U.S. and European intelligence officials have linked Russia to various acts of sabotage targeting defense companies, logistics facilities, public utilities, and military installations across Europe.
According to officials, Russian intelligence has allegedly engaged local criminals to carry out these acts, including arson attacks in the United Kingdom and Poland. Recent incidents attributed to Russia include a foiled plot to smuggle incendiary devices onto cargo planes bound for North America, with one device igniting at a courier hub in Germany and another in a warehouse in England.
These acts of sabotage are seen as part of a broader hybrid campaign by Russia to undermine the ability of Ukraine's allies to support its defense efforts against Russia's invasion. Despite the allegations, Russia has denied any involvement in these incidents. The National Counterintelligence and Security Center, in collaboration with the FBI and various Department of Defense agencies, issued the warning to safeguard national assets from intelligence threats.
