US Covid entry requirements for Brits including rules for unvaccinated travellers

Brits planning USA holidays should be aware that the popular getaway destination still has Covid entry rules in place for travellers.

In fact, it's one of 26 countries that still have Covid rules in place for tourists.

The US remains a firm favourite with UK travellers, with brilliant options year-round from the spectacular national parks to visiting New York at Christmas.

However, if you're planning a visit for holidays, you'll need to be able to show proof of full Covid vaccination.

Under current US entry requirements, you can visit without needing any PCR tests or quarantine if you can show proof that you are fully vaccinated against Covid. (It's worth noting that the NHS Covid pass is accepted as proof).

If you're not fully vaccinated, you can't enter the USA for tourism purposes.

According to the Foreign Office: "Only those with an exception or US Citizens, US Nationals, and US Lawful Permanent Residents will be able to enter the US unvaccinated. More details are on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and US Embassy websites, which includes a list of exceptions from the vaccination requirements for certain categories of non-citizens and non-immigrants."

There are of course a small handful of exemptions, but these will be for essential travel rather than holidays.

They're not the only entry requirements to take into account if you're planning a trip.

For tourism purposes, you'll need an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), which can be obtained by applying online through the US government website.

Recent US visa rule changes caused some confusion among holidaymakers.

Under US law, anyone who has travelled to a country on its international terrorism list is unable to enter.

If you've been to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and/or Yemen since 2011, you have to jump through a whole series of hoops to be allowed into the US.

In his final days of office, Donald Trump added Cuba to that list.

While many feared that anyone who had visited the sun drenched island in the past 11 years would not be elligible for an ESTA, it's since been confirmed that the rule only applies for those who have been since January 12, 2021.

Travel restrictions can change quickly. Always check the Foreign Office's latest USA travel advice before booking a trip or going abroad.
