Following the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has deployed over 1,000 personnel to aid in the aftermath. This team comprises engineering, construction, contracting, and operations specialists who will collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to address the situation.
A recent USACE news release stated that the primary objectives include the removal of the collapsed bridge and the clearance of the federal shipping channel affected by the incident. The Baltimore District Commander, Col. Estee Pinchasin, expressed condolences for those impacted by the tragic event and assured that emergency managers are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with partner agencies for any necessary support.
The USACE's role in the response effort will involve providing structural engineering support, managing waterway debris, utilizing certified underwater assessment capabilities such as sonar technology, and conducting hydrographic and topographic surveying to assess the extent of the damage and plan for recovery operations.
