South Korea and the US military have fired four surface-to-surface missiles into the sea as tensions with North Korea soared.
It followed North Korea launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile that went over Japan for the first time in five years on Tuesday and prompted a warning for residents there to take cover.
The North Korean missile was its furthest yet and caused international condemnation.
According to the South Korean military one of the four missiles that were sent in response failed shortly after launch before crashing.
South Korea and US warplanes have also conducted bombing drills.
A series of surface-to-surface missiles were launched into the sea off the east coast by the South Korean and US militaries, reported Yonhap News Agency (YHA), while adding that one failed.
It was a show of strength, South Korea's joint Chiefs of Staff reportedly said on Wednesday.
"North Korea has maintained its status of surveillance at all times no matter where it provokes, demonstrating that it has the capability and readiness to neutralize the origin of a provocation," it stated, reported (YHA).
Each side fired a pair of US-made ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles.
The military also confirmed that a South Korean Hyunmoo-2 missile failed shortly after launch and crashed, but caused no casualties.
US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned North Korea's test in the "strongest terms," while the European Union called it a "reckless and deliberately provocative action".
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the launch was a violation of Security Council resolutions.
And the United States asked the UN Security Council to meet to discuss North Korea on Wednesday but diplomats said China and Russia are opposed to a public discussion by the 15-member body.
It was the first North Korean missile to follow a trajectory over Japan since 2017, and its estimated 4,600 km flight was the longest in a North Korean test, which are usually "lofted" into space to avoid flying over neighbouring countries.
Japan warned its citizens to take cover and suspended some train services when the missile passed over its north before falling into the Pacific Ocean.
In response, US and South Korean warplanes practiced bombing a target in the Yellow Sea and fighter jets from the United States and Japan also carried out joint drills over the Sea of Japan, the US military said, the latest move in a cycle of muscle flexing.
