During the test, a B-52 Stratofortress launched the All-Up-Round AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) at the Reagan Test Site, taking off from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam on March 17, 2024. Andersen Air Force Base is a crucial US military position in the Pacific and frequently hosts Air Force bombers for regional operations.
The ARRW program features a long-range hypersonic weapon with a hypersonic glide body capable of maneuvering at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound. Hypersonic weapons are challenging to intercept, leading to a significant focus on their development by the US military and its adversaries in recent years.
While the Air Force did not disclose the test's outcome, they emphasized the acquisition of valuable insights into the new technology's capabilities. The test aimed to enhance hypersonic programs, validate test and evaluation capabilities, and improve advanced hypersonic systems development.
The recent test is part of the ongoing ARRW prototyping program, following a failed test in March 2023. Despite not planning to pursue further procurement of the ARRW after the prototyping program concludes, the Air Force recognizes the importance of completing test flights to gather essential data for future hypersonic programs.
