Irish holidaymakers are being warned to take care when using travel adaptors this summer due to "serious issues" which includes a risk of electric shock.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued the warning yesterday to consumers in Ireland concerning three products - one sold in Harvey Norman, one bought from Amazon and another available in several retail outlets. In a statement, the CCPC said: "Our product safety experts tested a number of adaptors sold in Ireland and found some serious issues.
"While we work to ensure all unsafe products are recalled or withdrawn from the market, and to prevent these problems reoccurring, we’re advising all consumers to check the list of recalls for their travel adaptor and to take care when using all travel adaptors." According to the CCPC, 7,600 travel adaptors have been recalled and 6,200 have been withdrawn from sale.

Here is a full list of the three different types of travel adaptors being recalled:
G&BL Universal Multitravel Adapter
JDM Products Limited is carrying out a recall of G&BL Universal Multitravel Adapter, purchased in Harvey Norman in Ireland, from which 1,222 affected products in the Republic of Ireland have been purchased. Consumers have been asked to stop using it.
The warning from the CCPC reads: "The product presents a risk of electric shock as the shutters of the adaptor are absent for the Australian socket system on the adaptor, which may cause the user to access live parts (e.g. the pin) and receive an electric shock."
The brand is G&BL, and the type/number of model is Art. 6769. The bar code is 8011884067692, and the batch number is unknown.
Homesafe Universal USB Travel Adaptor
Homeline has recalled the Homesafe Universal USB Travel Adaptor manufactured from 2021 to 2022, of which 6,040 affected products in the Republic of Ireland have been purchased from various retailers. WELLY enjoy IT universal travel adapter
The final travel adaptor being recalled is the WELLY enjoy IT travel adaptor which is sold on Amazon, with 50 of these affected products purchases in Ireland. The warning says: "The risk presented by the product is electric shock.
"During normal use, the US pin breaks off and stays in the socket. When trying to get the US pin out of the socket with their fingers, the user suffers an electric shock." Anyone who has bought this product is being advised to stop using it and to get rid of it.
The type/number of model is WY13100, and the ASIN number is B07DRP4NND. The barcode is 8054392613845.
The CCPC is encouraging all consumers to follow these tips when using a travel adaptor:
- Use only in the countries listed on the product, its packaging or accompanying safety information.
- Always plug the appliance into the travel adaptor first, before inserting the travel adaptor into the socket.
- Don’t overload the adaptor: it’s designed for short-term use only, with low energy consumption devices, not as a replacement for a domestic socket.
- Unplug the adaptor when you’re finished using it, when you’re leaving the house or your accommodation, and when you’re going to sleep.
