Two more people have died in connection with the Legionnaires' disease cluster on Manhattan's Upper East Side, raising the confirmed death toll to nine, city health officials said Friday afternoon. Both patients had been diagnosed weeks earlier, and one of the two was a case already on the books that investigators have since reclassified as connected to the cluster.
The announcement came roughly two weeks after the city told residents that transmission tied to the cluster had ended. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin, who confirmed the deaths in a statement posted on X, said the source of exposure has been eliminated. "We mourn each loss, and our hearts are with their loved ones," he wrote, adding that "these cases were diagnosed weeks ago, and the source has been eliminated." One person connected to the cluster remains hospitalized.
