Following the announcement of compensatory draft picks, the Kansas City Chiefs will have a total of nine picks to use as they please in the 2022 NFL draft.
The team was awarded two compensatory draft picks, one for the Chicago Bears hiring Ryan Poles and another for the players that they lost during the 2021 NFL free agency period. They’ll have five picks in the top 135 picks in the draft, but also they’ll have four draft picks in late Day 3.
Remember, the Chiefs sent a 2022 conditional sixth-round draft pick to the Steelers for Melvin Ingram, which was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens in the Orlando Brown Jr. trade. Speaking of that trade, that’s also where the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick went this season.
The team also traded their own sixth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in the Mike Hughes trade, acquiring a seventh-round draft pick in the process. One of the Chiefs’ seventh-round picks is coming from Las Vegas via New England from the Yasir Durant trade.
With all of that in mind, here is a look at all of the Chiefs’ 2022 NFL draft picks:
- Round 1, 30 overall
- Round 2, 62 overall
- Round 3, 94 overall
- Round 3, 103 overall (Compensatory)
- Round 4, 135 overall
- Round 7, 233 overall (Hughes trade)
- Round 7, 243 overall (Durant trade)
- Round 7, 251 overall
- Round 7, 259 overall (Compensatory)
In the four years since Brett Veach has taken over as general manager, he’s never made more than six picks in a given draft. With so many picks on late Day 3, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the team package a few to move up into the sixth round for a prospect they really like. Who knows, maybe Veach ends up making just six selections again when it’s all said and done.
