Update: One man dead and woman taken to hospital after Johnstone incident

A 40-year-old man has died after an incident in a Johnstone street.

Police were called to MacDowall Street in the town at 1.50am this morning to reports of an incident.

They found a 40-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 59-year-old woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with serious injuries. Medical staff there have described her condition as stable.

An extensive cordon closing the street has been placed along MacDowall Street from its junctions with High Street and Quarry Street. Businesses in MacDowall Street have been unable to open while the police cordon is in place.

A forensics tent has been set up in the front garden next to one of the tenements on the street, and officers wearing protective clothing have also been seen combing the area.

Officers from Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team have been on site. Police have said they are following a positive line of enquiry.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 1.50am on Wednesday, 1 June, 2022, police responded to an incident in McDowall Street, Johnstone. Officers attended and a man, aged 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A 59-year-old woman was taken to QEUH with serious injuries, however, medical staff describe her condition as stable. The death is currently being treated as suspicious.

“Enquiries are at an early stage and officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information regarding it to contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 0213 of Wednesday, 1 June.

“Crimestoppers can also be contacted on 0800 555 111, where you can give information anonymously.”
