UP: Nomination rejected, AAP candidate bids immolation

LUCKNOW: In high drama at the Muzaffarnagar collectorate office on Monday, Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Meerapur Major Jogendra Singh tried to immolate himself when his nomination was cancelled.

The incident occurred on Monday morning after Singh learnt that his nomination papers had been rejected during scrutiny. In a video that surfaced soon after, Singh can be seen reaching for a fuel can kept in the parking lot of the office and dousing himself with it, even as police tried to stop him.

Party’s state president Sabhajit Singh said Singh took the step because the returning officer did not listen to him.

AAP MP and UP in charge Sanjay Singh said: “The nomination was rejected without any reason. Despite several attempts, we have not been able to speak to the DM. We will go to court against the returning officer.”
