UP: ASHA worker, railway staff’s spouse help woman deliver baby at Jaunpur city station

LUCKNOW: A timely intervention by an ASHA worker and a railway staff’s spouse, helped a pregnant passenger in labour pain to deliver a baby at Jaunpur city railway station in the absence of a medical team and ambulance on Sunday afternoon.

Anjali Devi (30) was traveling to Lucknow in S1 coach of Farraka Express from Bhagalpur along with her husband. At around noon, she developed labor pain and was alighted at Jaunpur city station in a stretcher by a railway staff, however there was delay in ambulance arrival and no medical staff was available because of it being an intermediate station.

Taking cognizance of Anjali’s critical condition, the railway staff contacted an ASHA worker (accredited social health activist) Nisha Singh, who was fortunately passing by the railway station.

“Anjali was taken inside the first-class waiting room area of Jaunpur city station, where Nisha and Sanju Devi, wife of railway sanitary worker Shyam Upadhyaya, helped in the delivery process.

Anjali and her newborn were later taken to the local government hospital following the arrival of an ambulance,” said senior divisional commercial manager Rekha Sharma of Lucknow division Northern railway.

Nisha Singh is posted in pulse polio immunization programme.
