Until Dawn 2 has been officially announced with a trailer at Sony’s State of Play. While this news isn’t entirely unexpected given the teaser bait added to the credits of the 2024 Until Dawn remake, the announcement was certainly a highlight of the showcase.
The game will feature a cast of characters brought to life by high definition motion capture, led by a few recognizable faces – as is tradition. This time, Dacre Montgomery (best known from Stranger Things) and Neil Newbon (Baldur’s Gate III) are the stand out stars of the game.
Until Dawn 2 is officially coming soon
Rather than continue on with another entry into The Dark Pictures anthology, which just released another title this May with Directive 8020, this game will be a direct sequel to the 2015 hit. Instead of a cold mountain top, Until Dawn 2 takes place on a warm tropical island, which seems eerily deserted.
As a group of young ghost hunters (and their mysterious older companion Sebastian) explore the island to create another episode for their show and get frisky in classic slasher movie fashion, things quickly go badly when a killer wielding a machete appears and gets to bloody work.
The now famous quick time events – in which players must make split second decisions that impact the rest of the story – is featured to gory effect when one character pushes another off a cliff while escaping the killer, leading one of them to splat on the rocks below.
In a blog post by PlayStation, the butterfly effect has been confirmed to make a comeback, with even more repercussions as “how you manage relationships within the crew matters more than ever, with some branches based on where things stand between characters”.
Peter Stormare, who played the psychiatrist in the first game, also made a short appearance at the very end of the trailer, promising a connection to the events of Until Dawn that is otherwise lacking.
Until Dawn 2 release date and platforms
So far, the only release window for Until Dawn 2 is 2027, so be prepared for a wait of likely over a year. As for platforms, PlayStation is the only confirmed place to play Until Dawn 2, which seems likely to remain true as the company recently announced they would scale back on releasing first party games to PC.
