Unseen moments from Leeds Rhinos' controversial Catalans win as players embrace the hate

It's fair to say Leeds Rhinos' victory over Catalans Dragons was chaotic. From minute one to eighty, it was a clash filled with drama, controversy and a lot of tension.

With the game taking place in France, many Leeds fans didn't get to see the match and given that, a lot of moments went unseen. But thankfully Rugby League Live was on hand to see everything that you may have missed.

Rohan Smith and Sam Tomkins

A story that quickly emerged following the game was the altercation between the Rhinos boss and Man of Steel, Sam Tomkins. Sadly, the cameras didn't capture the moment, meaning fans were starved of seeing it for themselves.

At half-time, Smith had made his way down to pitchside, where he initially had conversations with his players before they went down the tunnel. However, even after all of his players had left, he remained. Remaining on the field were the match officials and one other man, Sam Tomkins, who was remonstrating about something. As he approached the sideline, there was a clear exchanged between the pair, with Tomkins getting within very close proximity of the Rhinos boss as he made his way past him, before Smith followed him down the tunnel.

After the game, Smith gave his version of events. He said: "It just goes on, and on, and on. Every decision he's questioned and challenged. A suggestion that we should just play footy and see who is the best team at the end of the day."

Clearly, there was some animosity, with Smith even accusing Tomkins of diving. That will be a fun reunion next year!

Bentley v Tomkins & McIlorum

It should come as a surprise to nobody that James Bentley and Micky McIlorum had words during the game. But Tomkins was invovled there too. During one pause in play during the first half, Bentley was stood at marker waiting for play to resume. At that point, Tomkins was in his ear. What was said isn't clear, it might have been friendly, but after a short while Zak Hardaker came and took over the conversation from Bentley, sending him back to the defensive line.

Of course, Bentley had a fantastic game and certainly wasn't rattled at the end. His personal battle with McIlorum ended with the Catalans hooker sin-binned for a high tackle on him, so it's safe to say he got the better of that exchange.

Argument on the touchline

Even the coaching staff were at each other! Catalans' Sam Moa wasn't impressed with the Rhinos bench just before half-time and gave them a fair old spray while Tomkins was taking a penalty goal. Again, it's unclear what exactly his issue was, but he'd taken offence to Rich Hunwicks, Leeds' performance director.

But the match commisioner eventually had to ease Moa away from the area and, after returning for a second time, eventually calmed down.

Morgan Gannon is one tough cookie

It can't just be this writer who was uneasy watching Morgan Gannon laid out on the floor, arms upright and clearly concussed, after being on the wrong end of a brutal collision with Sam Kasiano.

Gannon looked in a bad way before eventually coming around. Although he inevitably failed his HIA, meaning he misses the semi-final, he had soon come around and actually walked around the edge of the field without the need of any assistance. He might only be a teenager but he's very tough!

Bye bye

The club's official YouTube channel has now caught this incident but one funny moment was Cameron Smith waving Gil Dudson from the field after he was red carded. The pair had gone at each other all game, had various confrontations and clearly weren't too impressed with one another.

So Smith, as petulant as it may have been, couldn't resist one last parting shot after Dudson was dismissed for leading with his head on Aidan Sezer.

Embracing the hate

It was an ugly end to the night as James Child was peppered with missiles on his way off the pitch. There's no condoning that. But it wasn't just the referee. The Rhinos players also were on the receiving end of plastic cups and other objects coming their way, but it didn't seem to bother them one bit.

Cameron Smith was seen laughing it off as he applauded the Leeds fans and not taking a backwards step as objects came his way. But the undoubted highlight goes to Jarrod O'Connor, who, as you can see below, loved every last second as they were jeered by the home crowd. And, given he had glow sticks, beer and whatever else aimed his way just before, he probably handled the situation much better than most would!
