University of Pittsburgh police have arrested a suspect following an attack on a group of Jewish students near the Cathedral of Learning on campus. The incident, which involved the suspect using a bottle as a weapon, resulted in two students being treated at the scene. The suspect, who is not affiliated with the university, was swiftly apprehended and is currently in custody.
The university administration promptly reached out to Hillel University Center and the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh to offer support to the affected students. Pitt Police officers are commended for their quick response, and the Student Affairs team is providing ongoing support to the students.
Assuring the public of safety, the university stated that acts of violence and antisemitism will not be tolerated. Local and federal authorities are collaborating with Pitt Police in the investigation.
Despite a separate shooting incident at the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, which is unrelated to the attack on the Jewish students, there is no ongoing threat to the public. The injured individual from the shooting is reported to be in stable condition.
Reflecting on the tragic history of antisemitic violence in Pittsburgh, notably the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting, the university remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its Jewish students. The Hillel University Center reiterated its dedication to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for these students.
As the fall semester commences, the university community stands united against hate and violence, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of respect and understanding among all individuals.
