United, Mariners share spoils in goalless ALW draw

A dominant Western United side has been made to settle for a goalless draw with Central Coast after struggling to find a way through.

United controlled the play for large parts and had the most chances but couldn't break Friday's deadlock at Ironbark Fields to back up their frenetic A-League Women season-opening win.

Showing the same grit as when they fired four first-half goals in a 4-2 win over Wellington Phoenix last weekend, the hosts had 18 shots to six and seven shots on target to one but still found no reward.

United captain Chloe Logarzo and Catherine Zimmerman were a threatening partnership, with Zimmerman just missing with a shot across the face of goal following a clever pass from the veteran Matilda in the seventh minute.

Logarzo, who scored a first-half double in the season opener, sent a rocket in the 12th minute from just outside of the box but was denied by Mariners goalkeeper Sarah Langman.

The draw was an equally frustrating result for the Mariners, who stunned reigning champions Sydney FC last weekend in a 3-1 triumph at home.

England's Jade Pennock, electric on debut for Central Coast with a goal and assist, peppered at goal throughout the affair but could not find the back of the net.

The visitors had a glimpse at scoring when Peta Trimis lured keeper Alyssa Dall'Oste off her line but defender Grace Maher cleared her attempt in the 36th minute.
