The Unite the Union Champions Cup looks set to be revived with dates for the semi-finals and final expected to be announced this week.
The cross-border competition was in turmoil last November as Shamrock Rovers and St Pat’s were in the dark as to when the matches would be played.
As it was the end of the domestic League of Ireland season - and St Pat’s had the FAI Cup final to consider - it was a struggle for all sides to settle on dates.
Rovers were due to play St Pat’s in one semi-final with Irish League clubs Linfield and Coleraine meeting in the other.
In the end, organisers postponed the matches citing Covid concerns on both sides of the border.
But League of Ireland director Mark Scanlon has indicated there is an announcement imminent, reports the Irish Mirror.
“We’ve said in the (FAI) strategy that we want to be bold in terms of competition structures so we look forward to seeing what that brings in the future,” he said.
“We obviously have the Unite the Union Cup that’s still in place for this year, semi-finals and final, which was delayed because of the pandemic.
“In the next week or so we’ll have some more information on when exactly that is going to be.
“We’ve just got to thrash some of that out with the sponsors and agree some of the information on that.
“We’ll have that very soon but any of the conversations we’ve had with sponsors and the Irish FA they’ve all been very positive for the competition.”
The ‘Champions Cup’ winners will pocket €60,000, the runners-up land €40,000 and there is €25,000 for each of the beaten semi-finalists.
