Unique walk near Edinburgh that passes enigmatic church from Da Vinci Code

Lying just 40 minutes south of Edinburgh is a walk with a difference. Heading to Roslin Glen will see you take on a path that passes not only the spectacular ruins of a castle and old gunpowder mill (that featured in Outlander no less) but also to one of Scotland's most mystery-shrouded buildings.

Part of a country park with picnic spots and seating, Roslin Glen is easy to get to with plenty of free parking, once there you can embark on a hike filled with wildlife and plenty of history.

Surrounded by the largest surviving stretch of ancient woodland in Midlothian, the route takes in the impressive semi-ruins of Rosslyn Castle, the ancestral home of the St Clair family, parts of which date back to the 13th century.

Should you be up for a real wander you can even head to the remains of the Roslin Gunpowder Mill, the famous Outlander filming location of Roslin Gunpowder Mill, which was once one of the largest in Scotland.

However, the crowning glory of this walk is Rosslyn Chapel, the enigmatic church that featured in the Blockbuster film, the Da Vinci Code.

Those familiar with the film will know that its dramatic conclusion is set at the Chapel, where symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu ( Audrey Tautou) discover an incredible truth.

The building is filled with intrigue and mystery due to the symbolism found in its ornate stonework, with theories swirling around the site including everything from it being home to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail to it being an ancient stargate used by extraterrestrials.

Founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair, the beautiful chapel is best known for its appearance in the aforementioned Da Vinci Code films and books, with visitor numbers exploding after its appearance.

You can visit the chapel and see inside with enthusiastic guides offering tours and sharing stories daily of Rosslyn Chapel’s rich history and amazing stone carvings with visitors.

You can follow the route from the South of Scotland visitor's website .
