UNICEF Study: Resilient Energy Systems Could Save Lives In Pakistan

UNICEF's Copenhagen warehouse prepares aid for Gaza

A recent study by UNICEF has highlighted the critical importance of developing resilient energy systems in Pakistan to power health facilities. According to the study, implementing such systems could potentially prevent over 175,000 deaths in the country by 2030. In addition to saving lives, it is estimated that this initiative could contribute $296 million to Pakistan's economy over the next two decades by reducing maternal, adult, and infant mortality rates.

The study comes at a crucial time as Pakistan grapples with an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring as high as 49 degrees Celsius in some regions. The heatwave has not only led to a surge in illnesses but has also put a strain on the country's healthcare system, already burdened by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Authorities in Pakistan are also dealing with forest fires, which have become increasingly common during heatwaves in recent years. Efforts to contain these fires are underway, with firefighting helicopters deployed to douse the flames.

UNICEF defines resilient energy as reliable, flexible, accessible, and high-quality power supplies that can withstand and quickly recover from unexpected disruptions such as power outages and floods. The agency emphasizes that ensuring resilient energy supplies for essential facilities like schools and health centers is crucial for the well-being of children.

Climate change is identified as a key factor contributing to energy disruptions in Pakistan, with recent floods and extreme weather events causing significant damage to water infrastructure in the country. UNICEF has been actively involved in restoring water systems and implementing solar electrification initiatives to address these challenges.

Highlighting the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors, UNICEF stresses the importance of investing in renewable resources to secure a sustainable energy future for Pakistan. By leveraging the country's abundant renewable energy potential, there is an opportunity to not only improve children's health and education outcomes but also drive economic growth.

As Pakistan continues to face climate-related challenges, the call for action to build resilient energy systems has never been more urgent. With concerted efforts and strategic investments, Pakistan can pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for its citizens.
