Uni professor calls for sound cameras in Newcastle to tackle 'serious harm' caused by noise pollution

There's calls for the introduction of noise radars in Newcastle to deter nuisance drivers and to provide greater protection for residents plagued by sound pollution.

'Sound camera' technology, which works by measuring a vehicle's noise emissions before taking a picture of the license plate if it exceeds a certain threshold, is already proving popular in several French cities and in one London borough.

Newcastle University geography professor Alastair Bonnett, 57, is calling for the technology to be introduced around the North East to improve the physical and mental welfare of residents.
