Unforgotten writer shares major update on Season 5 ahead of release date

Fans of ITV's popular detective drama Unforgotten will be pleased to hear writer Chris Lang has shared an update on series 5. The cast, which is led by actor Sanjeev Bhaskar as DI Sunny Khan, will see a shake-up following the death of DCI Cassie Stuart in season 4.

Cassie was played by Nicola Walker, but it will be Sinéad Keenan, known for Showtrial and Little Blue Boy, who will be taking over the reigns in season 5. ITV bosses confirmed the Dublin-born actor will play the role of DCI Jessica James when the show returns.

When the news was announced earlier this year, Sinéad said: "I have long been an admirer of Chris Lang’s work so I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Unforgotten team.

"I'm very much looking forward to working with the extraordinary cast led by the brilliant and incredibly lovely, Sanjeev Bhaskar. And I'm hoping that if I play my cards right I might even get to take a peek in Sunny's backpack!"

And while an official release date hasn't been announced by ITV, Chris has revealed the cast has wrapped up production and hinted the series will air in 2023. Posting on Twitter he told his 22k followers: "So we finally finished production on S5 of @Unforgotten last week.

"All that is left to be done now is for it to be wrapped and tied with a bow, and then it'll be delivered to you in the new year. It's close team, it's so close. @TVSanjeev @SineadKeenan."

What we do know is that the new series will open with the clock ticking down to DCI James' first day in her new job with an unforeseen and devastating introduction to her family life. Determined to make a good first impression with her new colleagues, will Jess be in the right frame of mind to deliver and inspire the team?

Jess’ first case is the discovery of human remains in a newly-renovated period property in Hammersmith, London. But how long have they been there and is this a murder dating back to the 1930s or has the body been disposed of in more recent times?
