A mum has said that schools should ban rewards for perfect attendance. She said the school where he son went was now considering rewards for whole classes and it wasn't "fair to children who have disabilities or medical conditions".
The mum, called Sophie, told Mumsnet that her son had a medical condition that meant he had to sometimes go to appointments during school time. That, she said, meant he couldn't achieve 100% attendance.
She said: "Our school gives out certificates for 100% attendance and he rarely gets these. There is now talk of starting a scheme where the whole class is rewarded each day everyone is in.
"I don’t think this is fair to children who have disabilities or medical conditions that may make them need to miss school, totally outside of their control. Also - should we really reward children purely because they don’t catch any nasty bugs? Hardly seems fair!"
As reported by NottinghamshireLive, Sophie received mixed responses to her post. One person said: "Attendance awards are ableist." Another added: "You need to tackle the government policies that drive this, not the schools."
Someone else said: "Good attendance is vitally important in schools so it is worth rewarding. Can you not just explain to your son that this is one award he is unlikely to get but through no fault of his own?"
