Crowds queued outside the British Museum this week, some dressed in medieval attire, for a first look at the Bayeux Tapestry, on display in England for the first time since it was made almost 1,000 years ago.
The 70-metre embroidery tells the story of the Norman Conquest of 1066 in astonishing detail. But its own story is almost as remarkable: a revolution it narrowly survived, a dictator who took an interest in it, and a war that nearly saw it disappear again.
