Uncertainty over 'ugly' plan for new Beeston GP surgery to replace historic building

People in Beeston have voiced their concerns over an 'ugly' plan to relocate a GP to a new building.

The Manor Surgery is currently located in Middle Street, in Beeston, but it has been proposed that it should relocate to an entirely new site off Chilwell Road.

This is because the patient list, which currently sits at 13,000, is expected to grow to 18,000 by 2025.

If plans are approved construction will begin later this year with completion of the community clinical facility delivered by early summer 2023.

People in the town were uncertain over the new plans, with conservationists the plans would seemingly result in the demolition of a large Victorian building called Oban House.

Ian Stevens, 52, who lives in Beeston and works at a university, said: "The plans are a bit ugly to be honest.

"It doesn't look in keeping with the rest of Chilwell Road, which has quite a lot of character. There's been changes down here but most have been sensitive to that.

"It's a shame that they are not just looking to expand the existing building, I'm not sure it's the right thing to move.

"But then it's a balancing act because anyone would support GPs being able to help more people."

Another Beeston resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It seems a bit wasteful to move it and knock down another building.

"But people need to see their GP's, I think trying to get an appointment frustrates a lot of people."

Beeston Civic Society have also spoken of their opposition to the plans and have launched a campaign to save Oban House.

In a Twitter post sharing the campaign, the Beeston Civic Society said: "[Oban House] may 'only' be Victorian.

"But it has served our community in many forms - Beeston's only female GP surgery and home 1926-66, Social Services HQ, Local Volunteering Centre, tea room, Labour offices, Heritage Day setting... picnic garden. It is a heritage asset."

Others though saw the move as a positive for the area and supported the plans.

But Dave Bird, who had only recently moved to Beeston from Solihull, said that the move was a sign of progress.

The 46-year-old bus driver said: "I think it's a good thing, I recently moved to Beeston and set up with the GP here [Manor Surgery].

"Getting to see doctors is a problem, I have an issue with my foot but it's hard to get an appointment with a doctor for it.

"I know it's supposed to be knocking down some old building but I don't really care about that - times have moved on."

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live previously, Louis Mok, partner at the Manor Surgery, said: "The location is ideal, prominent, easy to find and accessible by public transport.

"We have been keen to ensure the new building is designed to the best possible standards. The property will benefit from Air Source Heat Pumps and a range of other energy-saving facilities which will future proof the property for years to come and reduce our carbon footprint.

"This development will allow us to provide the best possible clinical care to the ever-growing patients in Beeston within top quality surgical premises.”
