PUNE: Top officials from the ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying have yet to provide any clarity regarding the tabling of the draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament, set to commence on July 20. This persists despite the department and Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving thousands of emails as part of the "No More 50" campaign, urging them to table the bill during the session. The "No More 50" campaign aims to increase penalty for animal cruelty In India.
In response to inquiries about the possibility of tabling the animal welfare bill during the upcoming monsoon session, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Parshottam Rupala provided an ambiguous statement. Rupala said, "We are following the necessary procedure for tabling this bill. Currently, the bill has not yet reached that stage."
Another top official from the union government's Department of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying told TOI, "The decision to table the draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Bill is uncertain at this stage. It will depend on the number of bills scheduled to be tabled during the session. If the number of bills is not excessive, there is a possibility that the animal welfare bill could be presented. However, if there is a significant volume of other bills to be considered in the session, certain laws may be given higher priority than others, potentially impacting the tabling of the animal welfare bill."
