Michael Beale has pleaded with Rangers fans to lay off Ross Wilson after more banners and protests aimed at the sporting director at the weekend. The Light Blues faithful reckon it’s time for change with Wilson and managing director Stewart Robertson in their crosshairs.
Boss Beale leap to their defence and claimed Wilson will be a crucial figure as he rebuilds his squad in the summer. But Bill Park, Bathgate, said: “Rangers supporters are quite right to criticise Ross Wilson, as he failed to sell Morelos last year for decent money. Also, some of the players he brought in shouldn't have been near Ibrox. Much investment has gone into the academy but where are the players that should have graduated to the top-team? The protesters are right as change is needed at the top at Rangers, starting with Wilson.”
Celtic fan Bud Hay, Dumfries, couldn’t resist a dig when he said: “The league is by and maybe the Scottish Cup so what are Rangers fans going to do when Celtic beat them? They will be wanting Robertson, Wilson, and Beale out the door.” Over at Celtic and Liel Abada appears to be in Southampton’s sights with the Premier League big guns eyeing an eight-figure bid for the Israel international.
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “If Southampton are lining up a £10million bid for a player who’s not a regular starter it would be an outstanding piece of business. I believe Abada wants to ply his trade in the Premiership. More likely the Championship with the league position Southampton are currently in.”
Paul McCormack, Coatbridge, said; “Another player leaving Celtic eh, really? Well if he is, Ange will have his replacement signed quickly enough for Abada to hold open the welcome door. Thanks and cheerio, we don’t stop.”
It didn’t take long for the calls to revert to the weekend VAR shambles. And there was almost consensus across the board that the technology isn’t fit for purpose.
Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “It's high time the SFA took a leaf out the RFU book. In the England v Ireland 6 Nations game you could hear the conversation between the ref, linesmen and studio people. The ref called for the TMO and the whole nation could watch the playback. He did this all in under a minute. He allowed the player his say then the player accepted the decision and left the park. No histrionics from anyone.”
Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, agreed: “The standard of Scottish refs is bad, VAR was supposed to help out but nothing has changed. Something must change. Surely the Scottish league can do better?”
Tom Paterson, Falkirk, said: “The blatant hand ball seemingly missed by VAR at Rugby Park was atrocious. Those two dropped points could be the difference between relegation and survival for Killie come season end. The VAR responsible should be asked why no pen was awarded. I would love to hear the excuse. Huge decisions like this need an explanation as people's livelihoods are at stake. Transparency is needed by the fans.”
Rab Hunter, Dumfries, said: “Surely the Compliance Officer will have to come out of hibernation and ban Curtis Main? Video evidence proves it was the most blatant act of cheating/diving which dramatically altered the result of a game. Is that not contrary to the rules and therefore should be subject to retrospective disciplinary action? Players previously charged with such actions have always received a minimum two-game ban.”
Tongue-in-cheek James Kennedy, Kilsyth, added: “Six months down the line VAR is causing more problems and arguments than it is resolving. The SPFL will have to scrap it as soon as possible otherwise Rangers will not win the league again next season.”
