Teens in western North Carolina who need inpatient psychiatric care now have a new option closer to home. UNC Health Pardee opened the 23-bed Pardee Adolescent Behavioral Health Center inside its Hendersonville hospital on Sept. 9, serving young people ages 13 to 17, North Carolina Health News reported.
The unit accepts patients admitted voluntarily and under involuntary commitment, and a teen does not need to be an existing Pardee patient to be admitted. For families in Henderson, Buncombe, Transylvania, Polk and Haywood counties, that may mean shorter drives and fewer days spent waiting in an emergency department for a bed.
