Adam Reynolds says the behaviour that landed Reece Walsh a three-week suspension was "unacceptable" and insists Brisbane will help the 20-year-old ensure it doesn't happen again.
Broncos fullback Walsh was on Tuesday night found guilty by the NRL judiciary of contrary conduct and suspended for three weeks for his behaviour towards referee Chris Butler in Sunday's 18-12 loss to Gold Coast.
That included a foul-mouthed spray that Walsh, teammate Pat Carrigan and opponent David Fifita told the judiciary was not aimed at the official.
Brisbane skipper Reynolds believes Walsh on that score but said the rest of his teammate's behaviour was out of line.
"The feedback was for Patty (Carrigan)," Reynolds said.
"We spoke about whether it was to the referee, Patty, or anyone in the team the language was unacceptable.
"They have got a good relationship him and Patty.
"It does sound bad when it comes across the microphone but he is young and still learning the game and picking his moments when to speak and when not to speak.
"As a club, we need to support him and get around him and tell him it's not right. It is a lesson."
The Broncos want Walsh to focus on his role in the team and leave speaking to referees to Reynolds, who said he had a lengthy conversation with the fullback on Sunday night about his conduct.
"He was trying to better the team but it came across the wrong way," Reynolds said. "He is a young fella who makes mistakes.
"It is about us ... making sure we teach him how to be better so it doesn't happen again.
"He cares and he's very passionate. He wants to win at (whatever) cost he is willing to go to.
"I love seeing that in my players, and his competitive nature. He just needs to be a bit better."
Reynolds disputed that Walsh lied to the judiciary about the target of his outburst.
"If they say he is lying, they are all lying. They told their version of events, what happened on the field," Reynolds said.
The Broncos host the Dolphins at the Gabba in a Queensland derby on Saturday night, with Tristan Sailor lining up at fullback instead of Walsh.
"You basically throw form out the window with these games. They will be up for it. We will be up for it," Reynolds said.
"Any team coached by Wayne (Bennett) you know is going to be a tough contest.
"They are probably performing not to the standards they'd like but they have fielded a pretty strong squad and we expect a tough clash.
"We have worked on ourselves. We were pretty disappointing last week and have fixed up a few key areas."
