‘Unacceptable’, says India, after China issues stapled visas to wushu athletes from Arunachal

NEW DELHI: India’s 12-member wushu team’s trip to Chengdu, China, for the World University Games was called off late on Wednesday night after the Chinese embassy in Delhi issued ‘stapled visas’ to three female athletes hailing from Arunachal Pradesh — — Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega and Mepung Lamgu. This prompted an angry reaction from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which termed the move “unacceptable”.

According to sources, the wushu contingent, comprising eight athletes, was scheduled to leave for China on a Cathay Pacific flight late on Wednesday night from the IGI airport here. They were booked on a Delhi-Hong Kong-Chengdu route. However, when the team reached the immigration check at the IGI, the officers posted there objected to the stapled visas being issued to three Arunachal players and refused clearance to the entire contingent from boarding the aircraft.
