Despite Israel's request for U.N. peacekeepers to vacate some areas before its ground operation against Hezbollah militants, the U.N. peacekeeping chief confirmed that the peacekeepers are staying in their positions on Lebanon's southern border. The U.N. force, known as UNIFIL, is maintaining constant contact with the Israeli and Lebanese militaries to ensure the safety of over 10,000 peacekeepers.

UNIFIL, established to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon in 1978, expanded its mission after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. The U.N. Security Council resolution following the war called for the disarmament of all armed groups, including Hezbollah, and the deployment of the Lebanese army along the Israeli border, objectives that remain unfulfilled after 17 years.

The U.N. peacekeeping chief emphasized that UNIFIL had anticipated a limited ground operation and decided to maintain its presence for the time being. While contingency plans are in place, the focus is on ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers on the ground.

Israeli ground forces entered southern Lebanon early Tuesday, escalating tensions with Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants. The U.N. peacekeepers are not conducting patrols currently but are manning their positions, with a slight reduction in numbers in some areas.

The liaison mechanism between the U.N. force and Israeli and Lebanese counterparts has proven effective in addressing issues that have arisen since the start of the ground operation. UNIFIL continues to support civilian efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population in southern Lebanon.

As the situation in the region remains volatile, the U.N. peacekeepers are committed to their mission of maintaining peace and security in the area, working to prevent any incidents that could jeopardize the safety of personnel. The liaison officers are actively monitoring military movements and coordinating with relevant parties to ensure the well-being of all involved.
