UN Committee Fails To Reach Consensus On Palestinian Membership

A specialized UN committee met on Thursday to discuss Palestinian membership in the United Nations, but failed to reach a consensus, as reported by the president of the UN Security Council. The committee members were divided, with two-thirds in favor of advancing Palestinian membership. Many countries argued that Palestine meets all the necessary criteria to be granted full state member status.

The Security Council President, Vanessa Frazier of Malta, stated that no explicit objections were raised regarding the membership qualifications. She mentioned that a draft report on the deliberations would be circulated as early as Friday. In case of disagreement on the report, the committee may convene for further discussions to resolve any differences.

When asked if the deliberation process on Palestinian membership had concluded, Frazier indicated that unless there is a need to address differences in the report, no further committee action is anticipated. However, she highlighted that any UN Security Council member retains the option to propose a resolution for voting on Palestinian membership at any time, irrespective of the committee's report.
