Umling La: The World's Highest Motorable Road and What Altitude Does to Your Body

What Umling La Actually Is

The Border Roads Organisation opened Umling La to civilian vehicles in 2021, connecting the remote Demchok sector of Ladakh at 19,024 feet above sea level. That puts it above Everest Base Camp at 17,600 feet and above the Siachen base at roughly 12,000 feet. The air at the summit contains about 47 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. A healthy adult standing at the top is running on less than half the oxygen their body expects. The road itself is about 86 kilometres from Hanle, the nearest settlement with any meaningful infrastructure. It is paved, maintained by the BRO, and open to private vehicles and motorcycles. There are no fuel stations, no medical posts, no phone signal on most of the approach, and no shelter at the top. The summit marker is a painted board. That is the entirety of what you will find there.
