Umbrella Academy creator unsure if Netflix will give green light on Season Four

The third season of The Umbrella Academy dropped on Netflix last week and has since rocketed to the top of the platform's most-watched lists, racking up 124 million hours watched worldwide - but the show's creator does not even know if he'll get to make a Season Four.

With Stranger Things announcing it will only run for one more season, Netflix subscribers will be looking for more binge-worthy content but it is still up in the air whether the superpowered Hargreeves family. When asked by TVLine how many more seasons the show's fans could expect, showrunner Steve Blackman said: "I don’t know how many seasons [ Netflix ] wants to go. I pitched them Season 4."

Despite this, the smash-hit adaptation of the Gerard Way comic has yet to be greenlit by content bosses at Netflix for a fourth season, but fans who were hoping they might pay for a Season Five and Six should prepare for disappointment.

"I think inevitably if we got a Season 4, it’s going towards an endgame,” Blackman said. “I think at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after Season 4. We have to be careful."

With the third season's particularly convoluted ending, some viewers will be glad that the showrunners are thinking of wrapping it up. However, My Chemical Romance frontman and comic creator Gerard Way has signalled he is planning to write more Umbrella Academy storylines, so future spinoffs are not out of the question.

In the same interview, Blackman shared his plan to shake it up for the final season: "My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before.

"It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that. But I think if we got to Season Four, it would be a great ending for the run of the show.

"I’m not saying I couldn’t do more, but you know, I think that would be very satisfying for the audience, four seasons."

Teasing, Blackman later shared that he'd be open to dreaming up another season of super-powered action if "we’re so lucky to have more of that."
