Ulster players scoop Hurler of the Year awards as late Tyrone star is honoured at All Star banquet

After being named in the Nickey Rackard Team of the Year for the fourth year running earlier this week, the late, great Damian Casey was named as the Hurler of the Year after leading Tyrone to All-Ireland success this summer.

The Dungannon native hit 0-14 in May’s final against Roscommon in May, but tragically lost his life in an accident in Spain in June.

Members of his family, including his parents Sean and Susan, were at the award ceremony at Croke Park on Friday night.

The awards for the Joe McDonagh, Christy Ring, Nickey Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups were handed out along with the inaugural Tailteann Cup All Star awards.

In a year that also saw the Tyrone ace surpass the 400-point mark for Championship scores, Casey was named as the Nicky Rackard Hurler of the Year.

Antrim’s Conal Cunning was selected as the Joe McDonagh Cup Hurler of the Year after the Saffrons edged out Kerry in the 2022 decider.

The Dunloy ace scored 1-9 in the final and hit 2-55 across the McDonagh campaign and also helped his club retain their Antrim SHC title last weekend.

Kildare’s James Burke is the Christy Ring Cup Hurler of the Year while the Lory Meagher award went to Louth's Darren Geoghegan.

Westmeath defeated Cavan to win the Tailteann Cup in the first year of the new second tier football Championship and centre-forward Ronan O’Toole picked up the Tailteann Cup Footballer of the Year award.

GAA president Larry McCarthy said: "We promote a team game but throughout Irish history there has always been a place reserved for sporting heroes and for celebrating those who are a cut above in terms of inspiration and influence.

"Gathered here is a selection of the outstanding performers who lit up these competitions and played an integral role in what was yet another successful GAA inter-county season.

"I congratulate them all and salute all of our players who gave us such a memorable series of matches."
