UK’s unpaid carer crisis forces 1,500 to quit jobs every day

  • Carers UK estimates that more than 1,500 UK workers are resigning every day to care for sick, disabled, or elderly loved ones.
  • The proportion of UK adults providing unpaid care has risen to one in five, representing an estimated 11 million people.
  • About 3.33 million people have quit their jobs to provide care, with 1.1 million doing so over the past two years.
  • Carers UK has urged the government to introduce statutory paid carer's leave, warning that carers leaving the workforce costs the economy an estimated £37 billion annually.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously highlighted the severe strain on family carers, saying that providing care without adequate support can break people.
