- The University of St Andrews has claimed the top spot in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027, driven by strong performance across all league table metrics including high entry standards.
- Oxford dropped to fifth place while Cambridge remained in fourth place, marking only the second time in the 33-year history of the guide that both Oxbridge institutions have missed out on the top three.
- The London School of Economics and Political Science took second place, followed by Imperial College London in third, which was also named University of the Year 2027 after overtaking both Oxbridge institutions for the first time.
- Guide author Zoe Thomas explained that Oxford and Cambridge were hampered by lower undergraduate satisfaction scores in the National Student Survey compared to the top three universities.
- Editor Helen Davies emphasised that the new guide arrives at a critical time when universities face severe financial pressures and students navigate the toughest graduate job market in more than a decade.
