Ukrainian relief in London: What events to attend, where to donate and how to help?

As Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine sent shock waves around the world, Londoners took to Downing Street, Whitehall and Trafalgar Square in protest.

While children rode on shoulders, Ukrainian and Russian expats united in peace and placards expressed love and support for our fellow Europeans, photographer Sama Kai was there to capture an emotionally charged day in the capital.

Now, The Evening Standard has launched a Ukraine appeal to help the thousands scrambling to safety from fighting in Ukraine.

Your donations will support charities providing aid of food, water, medical supplies and shelter for refugees across the border and those displaced from their homes in Kyiv – and every penny counts.

And there’s more ways to help than one - here’s what’s happening in London to provide aid for the Ukrainian crisis:

Donations

From the capital, the Evening Standard Ukraine Appeal is gathering donations for those displaced from their homes in Ukraine and those fleeing conflict in neighbouring countries.

UK’s Ukrainian Embassy in London has its own donation page With Ukraine. London’s Ukrainian Institute has also formed a list of ways you can help here.

Donate food, clothes and other essentials

Donations don’t just come in the form of online PayPal transactions – charities like UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) calling for medical supplies, toiletries and hygiene products from 10am-7pm.

UkrainianLondon charity have set up collection points in several London boroughs including locations in Holland Park, Twickenham, Stratford and Kilburn – with full details available here.

Balham High Road’s The White Eagle Club are currently calling for bedding, batteries, flashlights, shoes and nappies for children, with volunteers delighted by the “wonderful scenes” of people queuing with donations.

Fundraising Events

London’s Chefs are hosting #CookForUkraine fundraisers with scheme adding voluntary donations of £1, £2 or £5 to your bill throughout March.

Ukrainian born Bloom Twins are holding a Night For Ukraine live music event at Roundhouse in Camden Wednesday March 9 at 7pm, with funds raised from the evening going to the Disasters Emergency Committee for emergency response units.
