Ukrainian refugee, 8, fighting for life after being stabbed as mum found unconscious

An eight-year-old Ukrainian refugee is fighting for her life after being stabbed in the neck.

The girl’s mother, 46, was found unconscious in the same home near Clarecastle, Co Clare, at around 8am yesterday.

Both of the refugees were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

A source says the young girl suffered several stab wounds, including one to her neck, the Irish Mirror reported.

They added: "The investigation is at the very early stages. What is known is that the young child suffered shocking injuries in a violent incident.

"But more will come to light in the coming days as the garda investigation progresses."

Detectives have launched an investigation into the incident while the Clare Civil Defence personnel and an interpreter were also called to assist Gardai at the scene.

A Family Liaison Officer has also been appointed to the relatives of the daughter and mother.

A Garda spokesman said: “This is a live and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.

"An Garda Síochána are appealing for anyone with any information on this incident to contact the investigation team at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”

Officers are set to begin house to house enquiries into the crimes.

More than 12million refugees are said to have fled the war in Ukraine since Vladimir Putin ’s brutal invasion started in February this year.

Around 50,000 are currently in Ireland, according to latest figures.
