Ukrainian president names new army chief

Mykhailo Drapaty, 43, has been named to succeed Oleksandr Syrsky as head of the Ukrainian armed forces. Unlike his Russian-born predecessor, Drapaty was trained exclusively inside Ukraine’s independent, post-Soviet system. (Photo: AFP)

KYIV - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced Mykhailo Drapaty as the country’s new commander-in-chief, following a political crisis triggered by Zelensky’s surprise ousting of a young modernising defence minister.

Drapaty, 43 replaces Oleksandr Syrsky, 60, an accomplished military strategist but one who was often criticised for Soviet-style practices and not caring about human losses.
