Ukrainian hub opens in Kilwinning as North Ayrshire prepares to welcome more refugees

A community hub for Ukrainian refugees living in North Ayrshire has opened in Kilwinning.

The facility – at Cranberry Moss community centre – will provide a central point of support to the 200 men, women and children who were welcomed into the region after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

North Ayrshire Council leader Marie Burns, who attended the opening, said: “The hub at Cranberry Moss not only provides a focal point for Ukrainians to meet and socialise, but it will also be an important source of information and support.

“We’re delighted to continue to offer whatever support we can.”

Many of the activities on offer at the hub were requested by the Ukrainians themselves.

They will be able to take advantage of education and language classes and will also see guest speakers invited to attend.

The hub will also be a point for the donation and collection of items such as toys, clothes and homeware.

It is also hoped that the hub will host celebrations of Ukrainian culture, from watching religious services or football games to cultural festivals.

The hub will also receive the regular information and support service from the council’s locality officers.

North Ayrshire's response to the Ukrainian crisis has been driven by the council's refugee task force whose aim has been to help those coming here adapt and settle into life in North Ayrshire.

It aims to ensure access for health services, education for children and even help prepare CVs to allow refugees to work or access training.

More Ukrainian families are expected to arrive in North Ayrshire in the coming weeks and months.
