Ukraine war: Why are so many people booking Airbnb in Ukraine?

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Airbnb bookings in Ukrainian cities have surged.

However, the people who are booking have no intention of making the trip.

Instead, they are using this as a way of getting much-needed funds to the Ukrainian people.

It's all part of a social media campaign that has come to the fore in recent days with as many as 61,000 nights being booked by Airbnb users.

Guests who book Airbnb rooms in Ukraine have been urged to books rooms as close to a check-in date as possible so that the host receives payments asap.

Airbnb usually claims between 3% and 15% fees for bookings but have confirmed that they are waiving all fees for Ukrainian hosts.

Users have taken to Twitter to post confirmation of bookings and messages of support to their Ukrainian hosts.

One user wrote: "Hello Maria, my wife and I have just booked your apartment for one week, but of course we will not be visiting. This is just so you can receive some money. We wish we could do more to help you and the people of Kyiv."

Another person wrote: "I hope that you, and your lovely apartment, are safe and that this horrible war is over ... and Ukraine is safe," it said. "I will come and see you one day, please count on it, and will stay with you when we visit. God bless you and God be with you, your city, your country."

The story came to the attention of Ryan Turbidy, who said on his RTE radio 1 morning show "there is a sniff of rebellion about that. I like that story."

Tubridy was part of a huge campaign to collect money for Ukraine at the weekend, as the Late Late Show was dedicated to raising funds for the Red Cross. The show managed to raise an massive €3 million.

The RTE host was amazed by people's generosity, and said that while he was out walking at the weekend, a woman handed him €15 on the street as a donation to the charity.
