Ukraine's men's curling team is celebrated in Perth and Kinross following historic success

Ukraine's Men's Curling Team - currently being hosted in Perth and Kinross - came first in the recent European Curling Championships achieving the country's most significant curling success.

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart met with the players last week to congratulate them on their success.

The Ukrainian international curling teams are being hosted by local sponsors across the Perth and Kinross area.

Perth and Kinross Council's resettlement team helped place the players with local hosts and - alongside Mr Wishart's office - worked to ensure they all had their visas to get to Scotland in time for the competition.

The men's team finished first in the European Curling Championships 2023 C-Division held in Dumfries from April 28 to May 4. The men's team finished first winning promotion to the B-Division while the women's team finished fifth.

Nataliia Menzeha secretary executive of the Ukrainian Curling Federation said: "This is the most significant success of Ukrainian curling so far, and the men's team is happy to win the gold medals of the championship and get the second in two years promotion to the B-division of the European Curling Championship. They worked hard during the entire tournament and knew the importance of each stone and each point.

"This is the best way to end the 2022/2023 curling season and both teams know that there is so much to do ahead between the season and the next season. So hopefully after some rest, they will return to curling ice for more experience and more success for the events of the next season."

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart met the players in Perth to pass on his congratulations.

He said: "I was thrilled to catch up with the Ukrainian curling teams following their success at the European Championships, with the men coming out victorious and the women also achieving their best result to date.

"The team went to great lengths to compete in the competition, and at one point it was looking very unlikely that we would get their visas issued in time, which makes this result all the more pleasing.

"The men have now been promoted to the B-Division which they will be competing in later in the year. In the meantime, all of the athletes plan to stay here in Perthshire to train, work and study, and I was delighted to hear that they are all settling in well."
