Ukraine has shot down more than 300 Iranian Shahed-136 “kamikaze” drones so far, said air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat.
The drones have become a key weapon in Russia’s arsenal during its war in Ukraine and have often been used in the past month to target crucial energy infrastructure.
Moscow has severely disrupted Ukraine’s electricity system in recent weeks, using drones to intensify attacks on Kyiv’s power stations and the distribution grid.
Western officials have accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia, but Iran continues to deny the allegations.
Last week, the US and key Western allies claimed that Russia’s drone attacks on civilians and power plants were in violation of a 2015 UN Security Council resolution and international humanitarian law.
The US, France, Germany, and Britain all supported Ukraine’s call for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to send a team to investigate the origin of the drones.
According to Moscow, such an investigation would violate the UN Charter and seriously damage the relations between Russia and the UN.
