Donald Trump said he was not considering giving Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine for carrying out strikes inside Russia, at least for now.
“No, not really," Trump told reporters as he flew to Washington from Palm Beach, Florida, when asked whether he was considering a deal to sell the missiles. He added, however, that he could change his mind.
Trump has publicly toyed with the idea of providing the long-range missiles to Ukraine, saying that Volodymyr Zelensky would like him to add Tomahawks to Kyiv's arsenal. Tomahawk missiles have a range of 2,500km, enough to strike deep inside Russia, including Moscow.
Trump and Nato secretary general Mark Rutte discussed the Tomahawk idea when they met at the White House on 22 October. Rutte said on Friday that the issue was under review and that it was up to the US to decide.
The US president's statement came as Ukraine’s military chief said his troops were battling “multi-thousand" enemy forces in key frontline town Pokrovsk in the Donetsk oblast.
Oleksandr Syrskyi said elite special forces had been deployed to defend key supply lines facing Russian fire.

"In the port of Tuapse, fragments of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) fell on an oil tanker, damaging the deck superstructure," the administration said in a statement.
"A fire broke out on the vessel. The crew were evacuated," it said.
The port is a key outlet for Russia's crude and refined products to reach international markets so its disruption is likely to impact the country's exports.
Kyiv has intensified strikes on Russian refineries, depots and pipelines in recent months to strain Moscow's fuel supplies and profits that help fund its war effort.

The pipeline is said to span 250 miles and supply the Russian army with gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
The operation was carried out late Friday, according to a statement on the Telegram messaging channel.
The agency, which is known by its acronym HUR, described it as a “serious blow” to Russia’s military logistics.
The operation, which targeted infrastructure near Ramensky district, destroyed all three fuel lines, HUR said.
“Our strikes have had more impact than sanctions,” said Kyrylo Budanov, the head of HUR, referring to international sanctions on Russia imposed over its full-out war and the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The city, home to 70,000 people before the war, has been all but completely destroyed and depopulated.
The Russian defence ministry's Zvezda news outlet said earlier Ukrainian troops were beginning to lay down arms inside Pokrovsk.
"We are holding Pokrovsk," Ukraine's army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Facebook.

Berlin airport stops flights briefly after drone sightings
