Nearly 100 Ukrainian children have died since the beginning of the Russian invasion, president Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Mr Zelensky said that 97 children had died amid heavy shelling of civilian areas across the country by Vladimir Putin’s forces.
He made the comments during an address to the Canadian parliament on Tuesday afternoon, adding that the Russian military was “destroying everything: memorial complexes, schools, hospitals, housing complexes”.
“We’re not asking for much. We’re asking for justice, for real support, which will help us to prevail, to defend [ourselves], to save lives,” he went on.
Elsewhere, Mr Zelensky said that his country “must recognise” that it cannot join Nato in comments that appear to suggest he is laying the groundwork for a peace deal with Vladimir Putin.
Russia has long demanded that its neighbour never be allowed to join the military alliance.
