Ukraine boss Oleksandr Petrakov thanked the people of Ireland for their hospitality following his side's Nations League win on Wednesday night.
A Viktor Tsygankov goal early in the second half gave the visitors victory in Dublin but Petrakov said the most satisfying aspect of his night was making the 3,500 Ukrainian fans in the ground happy.
He said: “This is clearly a very difficult time. The Ukrainians came to see us play in Ireland and were shown incredible hospitality.
“You guys took in our women and children who were risking their lives leaving Ukraine, and I want to extend my gratitude to the whole of Ireland.
“They’re still longing to go back to Ukraine but we made them a little happier tonight and that is the main thing in my view.”
Petrakov made 10 changes to the team beaten by Wales in Sunday’s World Cup playoff final, and he added: “I played youngsters who needed big game experiences.
“We made mistakes but I’m happy with the performance. It’s a positive experience after a bitter result in Wales. We’re turning the page and we’re looking forward."
