Ukraine Creates Buffer Zone In Surprise Invasion Of Russia

Ukraine's President Zelenskiy addresses a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed in a recent address that the surprise invasion of Russia's Kursk region is aimed at establishing a 'buffer zone' between the two countries. The primary objective of this defensive operation is to weaken Russian war potential and execute counteroffensive actions. This strategic move by Ukraine is intended to disrupt Russian supply lines and complicate Moscow's cross-border offensive.

Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed a bridge in the Kursk region near the village of Glushkovo, Russia. Another bridge was targeted in a separate strike, but details on its impact remain undisclosed. These strikes have had a tangible effect on Russian infrastructure, forcing Moscow to reassess its military strategy along the northeastern border with Ukraine.

The Institute for the Study of War's George Barros highlighted the significance of Ukraine's operation in Kursk Oblast, emphasizing that it has compelled the Kremlin and Russian military command to consider the northeastern border as a critical front line that requires defense. Despite Russia's efforts to fortify the international border area, there is a lack of manpower and resources to effectively defend these fortifications.

Since the commencement of the operation on August 6, Ukraine has claimed approximately 400 square miles of Russian territory. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations, with Ukraine strategically advancing into Russian territory to establish a buffer zone and disrupt enemy operations.
