UKHSA advises people to wear a mask and take a Covid test for Jubilee events

People are being advised to go back to wearing a mask and take a lateral flow test if they are mixing with vulnerable friends and family this Jubilee weekend. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued advice on how to enjoy the Jubilee weekend safely while a number of infectious diseases are circulating across the country.

They are advising people to return to Covid safety measures - and they have issued advice on how to best avoid monkeypox.

A UKHSA spokesman said people need to take precautions – like taking a lateral flow test if mixing with vulnerable family or friends or staying at home if feeling unwell with a high temperature or flu-like symptoms.

Dr Charlotte Bigland, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “While fewer people are wearing masks, it’s still advisable to wear one if you are indoors or if you are mixing with lots of people or on public transport. Washing your hands frequently and ensuring you cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as lots of other common infections. The best protection against COVID-19 is to get fully vaccinated."

She added: “Monkeypox is also circulating nationally and internationally, so it’s important to for people to stay vigilant. There has been a notable number of cases identified among people who are gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men, so we are asking these groups in particular to be aware of the symptoms, particularly if they have recently had a new sexual partner.

“Anyone with unusual rashes or lesions on any part of their body should contact 111 or their local sexual health service for advice. If you think you might have Monkeypox, please phone ahead before attending a healthcare setting in person so we can ensure a good clinical experience.”
