Iran has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as its new leader, more than a week after his father was killed in an airstrike.
The 56-year-old was chosen to become the next supreme leader on Sunday evening, despite Donald Trump’s insistence that he should have a say in the appointment.
"By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the assembly said.
Khamenei will step into the role having never held a position in Iran’s government. He represents a continuation of his father’s hardline policies, having opposed reformers and dialogue with the West.
The decision was announced shortly after the US confirmed that a seventh military service member has died from wounds sustained during Iran’s initial counterattack a week ago. They have not been named.
"Last night, a U.S. service member passed away from injuries received during the Iranian regime’s initial attacks across the Middle East. The service member was seriously wounded at the scene of an attack on U.S. troops in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on March 1," U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

South Korea to impose fuel price cap
03:25 , Alisha Rahaman SarkarSouth Korean president Lee Jae Myung said this morning that authorities would cap domestic fuel prices for the first time in nearly 30 years to contain a spike after the conflict in the Middle East sent global crude prices sharply higher.
Speaking at an emergency meeting on the impact of the Middle East crisis, Mr Lee said the government would “swiftly introduce and boldly implement” a maximum price system on petroleum products that have recently seen excessive price increases.
The current crisis “is a significant burden on our economy, which is highly dependent on global trade and energy imports from the Middle East,” he said in opening remarks.
He added that South Korea will also look for energy sources beyond supplies shipped via the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr Lee said a 100 trillion won ($66.94bn) market stabilisation programme could be expanded if needed, and called on the government and the central bank to prepare additional measures to respond to volatility in financial and foreign exchange markets.

Sunday 8 March 2026 15:33 , Dan HaygarthIran's foreign minister said “no one knows” who will be the country’s new supreme leader, just hours after a senior official claimed one had been chosen.
Ahmad Alamolhoda, a member of the panel, had told state media on Sunday morning that a leader had been chosen after an election – without naming who had been selected.

However, the country’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi later said “nobody knows” who will be the country’s next supreme leader.

As much as a quarter of the global seaborne oil shipments usually pass through the key route but traffic has ground to a halt due to the US and Israel’s war on Iran.
In a note released on Friday and reported by Reuters, Goldman Sach analysts said: “We now also think it’s likely that oil prices, especially for refined products, would exceed the 2008 and 2022 peaks, if Strait of Hormuz flows were to remain depressed throughout March.”

They urged the UN Security Council to condemn Iran and force it to "immediately and unconditionally halt its attacks" on Arab countries.
The ministers also voiced support to Lebanese government in its efforts to disarm Hezbollah, and urged the international community to pressure Israel to immediately cease its attacks on Lebanon.
The communique didn't mention U.S. and Israeli strikes, which triggered the war.

Sunday 8 March 2026 14:15 , Dan Haygarth
The US embassy in Oslo was hit by a loud explosion early on Sunday, causing minor damage but no injuries in what may have been a deliberate attack linked to the crisis in the Middle East, Norwegian police said.
"It's natural to see this in the context of the current security situation and that this could be an attack deliberately targeting the US embassy," Frode Larsen, head of the Oslo police investigation unit told a press conference.
No suspects have been identified at present but police are searching for one or several perpetrators and are cooperating closely with the embassy, Larsen said.
"One of our hypothesis is that this is terrorism, but we are also exploring other options," Larsen later told public broadcaster NRK.
The blast at the embassy compound in western Oslo occurred at 1 a.m. (00:00 GMT), sending thick smoke into the street by the entrance of the consular section, eyewitnesses said.
Norway's government was in contact with officials at the US embassy to convey that this was "an unacceptable act that we take very seriously", foreign minister Espen Barth Eide, said in a statement.
"The security of diplomatic missions is very important to us," he said.

Israel said it targeted key commanders of Iran's elite Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards but did not name them.
