UK weather: Warnings of travel chaos and power outages as 75mph wind storm rages

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for the majority of Scotland as the rainy yet mild temperatures continued to hit Britain.

Travel chaos and even power outages could come into play on Wednesday along with more miserable wet weather to follow from the gusty conditions.

The Met Office's yellow weather warning has been put in place from 4am on Wednesday morning until 1pm on the same day and described it as a "spell of very strong winds may cause some disruption to travel".

Gusts are expected to reach speeds of up to 60mph with isolated winds set to hit 75mph in some places, which in turn will cause high waves on the coast.

Met Office meteorologist Claire Nasir said: "For the next few days, it remains lively, wet and windy weather at times, sunshine in between and temperatures above average.

"But for the early hours of Wednesday morning, expect strong winds covering much of the country and there is a wind warning in force for central and western areas of Scotland.

"Gusts in land could reach 60mph, along the west coast 75mph, with some high waves."

For the rest of the UK, the start of the day will see the wet weather continue in a similar pattern to the week before the milder temperatures come through in a dry period, which will see some areas reach 16C.

But a new weather system during the afternoon means more rain is on the way for nearly the width and breadth of Britain heading into Wednesday night, with the risk of hail and thunder in the north and west of England.

Ms Nasir continued: "Look at these temperatures, though. It will be a mild start to the day come Wednesday morning, but for some it will be wet.

"So through the morning and into the afternoon, we watch these showers move across the country and then another system waits in the wings. And again, we could see some really heavy rain associated with that.

"Before that though, in any shelter, temperatures could reach 10 to 16C. Eventually, that area of rain will move northwards towards most parts of the country - most places seeing some wet weather."
